The JLPT
The JLPT (Japanese Language Proficiency Test) is the main internationally recognized benchmark for Japanese ability. It runs five levels from N5 (beginner) to N1 (near-native), and is offered twice a year in July and December at test sites across the world. The test covers reading and listening only, there is no speaking or writing component. For people pursuing work or study in Japan, N2 is the minimum.
